Slack is one of the most popular apps for communication at work. For this campaign, our team at Brand New School created a series of brand films, diving deeply into the culture to communicate and create visual expressions of the future of work.

The goal is to create an overall feeling of nostalgia and excitement through a mixed media approach that includes live-action, 2D, 3D and Cel animation, followed by fun and familiar objects organized in pleasant ways.

In the project, I was responsible for the majority of 2D illustrations, character design, type design, and customizing emojis using Slack’s brand elements. Additionally, I created design references to collaborate with the 3D designer. On top of that, I contributed diverse ideas for dynamic logo animations.

Brand Emoji Design

- Unicorn

Emoji plays a significant part in how people react to messages in Slack. The task was to create a unicorn and chameleon emoji for Slack. They both represent hope, imagination, curiosity, and optimism.

I used the elements from the Slack logo, such as the tear-drop shape and the capsule, to develop them, keeping the Slack spirits within the characters.

- Carrier Pigeon

Looking back to the history of message delivery, carrier pigeon plays an important role. I created this character and illustrated the moment of it picking out the message letter from the sender.

Illustration

Waiting for back and forth emails is just like looking back and forth in the sports game.

It was really challenging to illustrate a crowded scene of audiences without being overwhelming, especially with various skin tones, hairstyles, and outfits.

However, I kept the characters in limited colors and created a negative space pattern by using unified body shapes to keep the frame clean but also dynamic.
